In Loving Memory of Bernice Bell-McLaurin: A Legacy of Faith, Family, and Values

Bernice McLaurin

It is said that the true measure of a person's legacy lies not in the wealth they amass or the accolades they receive, but in the impact they have on the lives of those around them. In the case of Bernice Bell-McLaurin, her legacy is one that will forever resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was a woman of unwavering faith, a devoted mother, and a community leader whose influence extended far beyond her lifetime.

Born into a loving family, Bernice Bell was raised with a set of values that would shape her character and guide her throughout her life. Her parents instilled in her the importance of keeping God first, upholding integrity, appreciating others, and adhering to strong moral principles. These values were the foundation upon which Bernice built her life, and she, in turn, passed them on to her own children.

At the heart of her spiritual journey was her active participation in the church. She served on various church committees, contributing her time and energy to the betterment of her faith community. Her melodious voice graced the church choir, enriching the worship experience for all who attended. It was here that she discovered solace and strength through gospel spirituals like "Amazing Grace," "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," and "Precious Lord Take My Hand." These songs became a testament to her faith and an enduring source of inspiration during life's challenges.

Mrs. McLaurin was not only a devout Christian but also a firm believer in the age-old adage, "A family that prays together stays together." Under her guidance, her family attended church together every Sunday, fostering a bond that would prove unbreakable in the face of adversity. Her unwavering faith helped her overcome countless unforeseeable obstacles and served as a beacon of hope for her loved ones.

Beyond the walls of the church, Bernice Bell-McLaurin was a pillar of her community. She dedicated many years of service as the president of the Parent and Teacher Association (PTA) in Chicago, Illinois. Her leadership skills and commitment to education were evident through her unanimous election and her dedication to the betterment of her children's school. Her emphasis on the importance of high school graduation and college attendance underscored her belief in the power of education to uplift and transform lives.

Through her life, she consistently instilled in her children the values of mutual respect, treating others as they would want to be treated, helping those in need, and standing strong in the face of adversity. The wisdom she imparted was rooted in the biblical verse from Proverbs 22:6 (KJV): "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it." Her teachings were not mere words but a living testament to the values she held dear.

On September 9, 2008, Bernice Bell-McLaurin departed from this world, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and guide her loved ones. Her life was a testament to the enduring power of faith, the strength of family bonds, and the importance of living a life founded on love, values, and moral character.

As we remember and honor Bernice Bell-McLaurin, we are reminded of the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Her legacy lives on, not only in the memory of her family and friends but in the values and principles she instilled in them. May her life serve as a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration for generations to come, as we strive to carry forward her legacy of faith, family, and unwavering values.
